President's Report

Hello everyone,

Here we are again getting ready to start the season.  I sure wish you all the best on the trapline this year.  I have a few things I'd like to report on. On November 28th we met with the officials of the US Fish and Wildlife Agency concerning our being allowed to trap on the Federal Refuges.  We explained our side and why we felt we should be allowed to trap at these places.  I know there will be some areas they aren't going to allow trapping but our of the several hundred thousand acres they control, surely there must be some where we can trap.  They listened and are going to meeti together and report back to us on their answer  When we met at the convention, Chris Sharpe reported on the bill we wanted to introduce this coming year on the Nuisance license and fees associated with that  We voted and agreed on $25.00 license fee and ID cards issued by the department at a nominal fee.  We presented it to the DNR Board to get their approval on this and they felt the fee was too small.  The department has asked for us to increase the fee to $100 and the cost of the ID cards to be $25.  The ID cards would be for each employee so they wouldn't have to buy a license.  We feel that the price we set is in line with other fees charged by DNR such as commercial fishing licenses, shrimping licenses, crab pots, etc.  We need to hear from you, the members on the direction you would like for us to take concerning this matter.  Please contact your District Director and let them know your feelings so they can pass it along to us.

Some of us have agreed to help out with some gray fox samples this season so lets don't forget about that.

Also remember the fur coat project, we decided to go with beaver this year, so if you would like to contribute to this send you monetary donation to Freddie as soon as possible.  The furs are going to be donated so all we need to get is the money to pay for the making of the coat.

A big thank you to Jack Caldwell for the story he sent in on how he started trapping.  I think it is great.  It made me think on how I was bitten by the Trapping "Bug" a long time ago.

One more thing, when you receive your renewal notice for the SCTA please send in the entire slip you get, pleas don't tear off a copy and keep it, we need the entire slip.
